HOW IT WORKS
Schedule a Lesson
Schedule some time and we’ll bring all the rest - tiles, racks, mats, etc. For smaller groups, we can teach at private homes, or a reserved space for larger groups.
We’ll Bring the Tiles
We provide all tiles, cheat sheets, and other game supplies for every lesson. Check out TML to see some of the tiles we will be using.
Mahjong!
Each lesson is about 2 hours where we will learn the basics and move into playing several games.

About us 〰️
What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. Founded by a mother-daughter team who have combined decades of experience, Mahjong Theory is proof that playing Mahjong strengthens our connections within our families and across our communities.
Our goal is to bring this game of skill and luck to anyone looking to learn.
Maria has been playing Mahjong ever since her mom, ever a stickler for the rules, taught her the game. Through the years she’s honed her strategy in winning and playing defensively.
Her teaching style is thorough but also encourages creative and dynamic play.
In addition, Maria is a Mahjong Line Ambassador and an instructor trained by Molly Hardy, a Dallas-based expert.
Through these affiliations, Maria participates in continuing education to deliver the best instruction to her clients.
Outside of teaching Mahjong, Maria is a Boston-based marketing consultant.
What is Mahjong?
Mahjong is a 4-player tile game of skill, strategy, and luck
The game of Mah Jongg originated in China and is the predecessor to the American Mahjong game. While the two games are similar, the game of American Mahjong plays by a different set of rules that are governed by National Mah Jongg League (NMJL).
In American Mahjong, the game is played using a predetermined set of hands that the NMJL develops for a given year. The 2026 card can be found here.
Additional and alternative American Mahjong playing cards have been developed, such as the TML Big Card.
